James Brown Arena; Augusta, GA

– Projected Cost: $228M; Projected Completion: October 2024 HB was retained in January 2020 to serve as Project Executive Consultant to the AugustaRichmond County Coliseum Authority (ARCCA) for the new 10,000 seat James Brown Arena project currently in the design phase. Led a team that prepared the initial project feasibility, market analysis, economic impact, traffic analysis, parking study, site evaluation, conceptual design study and project feasibility. The new arena will replace the existing arena completed in 1970 and designed by I.M. Pei Architects and is expected to transform the downtown area. Currently, serving as the Owner’s Rep during Design Phase II in preparation Construction Phase III planned for 2022.

State Farm Arena Renovation / Atlanta Hawks

– Cost: $192M; Completed: 2019 Served as a Project Executive Consultant for the program management team during the design and renovation of the 19,000-seat arena originally completed in 1999. The arena, which currently hosts approximately 170 events and 2 million guests a year, will be dark for two summers to allow completion during the Hawk’s 2018-19 season. Some of the unique features of the renovated arena will include a barbershop with a view into the seating bowl, two Topgolf Swing Suites with simulators, celebrity branded restaurants and 360- degree access from the main concourse.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium / Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United

– Cost: $1.6B; Completed: August 2018 Served as Project Executive Consultant for the HHRM Construction Management Team during the latter stages of construction and closeout phases. The state-of-the-art facility not only features a circular retractable roof, but also an adjustable seat capacity of 74- 83,000 that accommodates major world-class events and performances such as Super Bowl LIII and MLB playoffs. As home to the NFL Falcons and MLB’s Atlanta United, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium also symbolizes building excellence being the first professional sports stadium in the U.S. to achieve LEED Platinum.

RELATIVE PROJECT EXPERIENCE

Stockbridge Amphitheater; Stockbridge, GA – Cost: $18M; Projected Completion: July 2021 Served as Project Executive Consultant during the construction phase of the 4,000-seat amphitheater nestled adjacent to City Hall and will serve as a cultural anchor in the establishment of the town center.

Emory Sports Medicine / Atlanta Hawks Player Development and Practice Facility – Cost: $54M; Completed in 2019 Served as a Project Executive Consultant for the program management team. The project, a joint development between the Atlanta Hawks and Emory Healthcare, Inc., is a two-story, 90,000- squarefoot building dedicated to the Hawks’ new Player Development & Practice Facility as well as a training, performance and sports medicine facility for Emory Healthcare, Inc. The complex features practice courts and fully dedicated recovery space that includes cryotherapy, sensory deprivation tanks, in-ground hydrotherapy, physical therapy and sport performance areas for the Hawks and Emory.

Home Depot Backyard; Atlanta, GA – Cost: $26M; Completed: 2019 Served as Project Executive Consultant for the HHRM Construction Management Team during the latter stages of construction and closeout phases. The 14-acre site area provides flexible community gathering space with a natural turf field for fan activation areas, tailgating space, and kid zone playgrounds. Additionally, a pre-fabricated structural steel pedestrian bridge spans nearly 100 ft., providing pedestrians with safe, direct, and unobstructed access above The Home Depot Backyard vehicular entrance.

BJCC Proposed Multi-Purpose Facility / Expansion Program – Cost: $530M (projected); Served as Program Director during the feasibility and planning phases for a proposed expansion program which included a 1.3-million-square-feet, 70,000-seat domed stadium with 200,000 sf of meeting space connected to the existing convention complex. Prepared the initial strategic plan / delivery strategy for the expansion program. Managed the selection process for the lead architect (HOK/Populous), preconstruction cost consultant / CM (Turner/B&G/Russell), surveyor, parking consultants and the developer (Bayer Properties) for the adjacent retail and entertainment district now branded as Uptown. Assisted with legislation for public funding, coordination with potential user groups, served as technical advisor for the feasibility / economic impact report prepared by Deloitte and Touche. Prepared the initial site Project Images assessment / evaluation which identified the approved site as the optimal location based on a matrix of factors.

BJCC Arena Improvements / Capital Improvements Program – Cost: $32M; Served as the Owner’s Representative / Program Director for various projects including an assessment of the Arena, improvements to the Arena for ADA compliance, Piazza renovations, property acquisitions, facility assessments, complex connectivity to city center and strategic planning.

University of Alabama / Bryant – Denny Stadium North End Zone Expansion – Cost: $47M; Served as Design Manager for the A/E design team performing design management services which included weekly coordination meetings to monitor the design production schedule in context with the overall project schedule, review open design submittals, tracking the resolution of design review comments, managing the RFI process and review of design change order requests. The North End Zone expansion increased the stadium’s capacity to 92,138 with the addition of 7,100 upper deck seats, 1,700 club seats, 38 skyboxes, a 600-seat club lounge, athletic offices, press conference room, ticketing facilities, concession areas and a 300-seat recruiting lounge. It also created new traditions through the addition of a landscaped “Walk of Champions” plaza.

BJCC Arena Club – Cost: $3M; Served as the Owner’s Representative to create pre-function space for major events held in the arena. The improvements consisted of new restrooms, a bar and a large open lounge and seating areas to accommodate various types of events. The space opens out to the BJCC Piazza for overflow crowds.

NFL Training Facilities Assessment – Cost: NA; Prepared a facilities assessment report for the City of Birmingham to define the general requirements of hosting an NFL professional football team training camp. The scope of work included the identification and assessment of facilities that could accommodate those requirements and any improvements that would be required to accommodate training camp. This included identifying a site that could accommodate three practice fields, an indoor practice facility, weight room, training facilities, temporary office space and a hotel with a four-star amenities package. The initiative was based on the historical precedence for NFL teams to have their training camps in other cities, either within their current fan base footprint or in an area where they would like to increase their fan base.

BJCC Concert Hall Facility Assessment – Cost: NA; Served as Program Director and facilitated an RFQ and RFP process to select a national firm to perform a facility assessment of the 2,800 seat BJCC Concert Hall’s various performance components including acoustical, lighting controls, stage, proscenium walls, rehearsal and dressing rooms.

BJCC Concert Hall Renovations – Cost: $8M; Served as the Project Director and prepared the project scope, managed the architectural selection process, design, bid and construction phases and the preparation of an overall refurbishment plan. The scope of work included replacement of 3,000 existing seats and carpeting, new handicap seating, improvements to the lobby, stage and dressing rooms.

Hoover Metropolitan Stadium – Cost: $6M; Served as Project Coordinator for associate architectural firm working with HOK Sports responsible for A/E design coordination and construction administration. The 10,500 seat serves as home to the SEC Baseball Tournament that features the top 12 teams from the Southeastern Conference and draws more than 100,000 fans annually.

1996 Atlanta Olympic Games Soccer Venue: Legion Field – Cost: $1.5M; Served as Project Manager for the conversion to accommodate Olympic soccer as a result of Atlanta being selected as the 1996 Summer Olympic site. Legion Field was one of the venues that hosted the Olympic Soccer matches. The existing football field dimensions were expanded and the synthetic turf was replaced with a natural grass turf with a 12″ sand based root zone and a P.A.T. drainage system. The field was later converted back from a natural turf to a rubber infield synthetic turf system.

Rickwood Field – Cost: $7M; Served as the Owner’s Representative as a Board member of the Friends of Rickwood Field. It is the oldest professional baseball park in the United States and was originally built for the Birmingham Baronsin 1910 by industrialist and team-owner Rick Woodard and served as the home park for the Birmingham Barons and the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues. Rickwood Field has been preserved and is undergoing gradual restoration as a working museum where baseball’s history can be experienced and is listed on the National Register for Historic Places.

Legion Field Structural Repairs – Cost: $5M; Served as Project Manager during the facility assessment and construction phases to address concrete spalling of the structural bents due to aging and water damage. The stadium was originally constructed in 1927 and has a 71,594-seating capacity. Railroad Park – Cost: $22M; Served as Project Director responsible for comprehensive program management and strategic planning services for the project from master planning to construction. Railroad Park is a 19-acre green space, spanning four city blocks, located in downtown Birmingham, AL that celebrates the city’s industrial heritage. The project includes a food emporium, lake with streams, walking trails, plazas, active play areas and large open green spaces. The award-winning park was created by a public/private partnership between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. The park is known as “Birmingham’s Living Room” and is a popular location for recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events has spurred millions of dollars in redevelopment investment within the Parkside District.

Carver Theater – Cost: $2M; Served as Project Manager for the renovation of historic 500-seat theater originally constructed in 1935. The theater serves as a performing arts venue and is home of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame and museum.

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Renovations – Cost: $5M; Served as Owner’s Representative performing project management services for the “Expanding the Legacy” Exhibit which was the first time the building had a major renovation since its original completion in 1992. The project required the coordination of work scopes for the base building, exhibit program and owner provided items while maintaining business operations, accommodating visitors and scheduled major events.
